New service to the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
SERV Wessex are pleased to announce the start of a new service to the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. The Air Ambulance has recently been given permission to carry blood on board the helicopter when performing their vital mission, enabling them to carry out life saving transfusions at the scene of any major incident.
Technology developed for use by the military in conflict zones allows blood to be transported in a specially designed box, enabling it to be kept fresh for several days. SERV Wessex volunteers now operate a regular 48 hour replenishment service from the pathology department at Southampton General Hospital to Thruxton Airfield near Basingstoke, home to Helimed 56, our local Air Ambulance. Unused blood is returned to the hospital for reuse whilst fresh blood is delivered to the aerodrome. The whole process takes place overnight whilst the aircraft is on the ground.
SERV Wessex are proud to be involved with the Air Ambulance charity and provide this new service alongside their existing support to major hospitals across Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire.
SERV Wessex is a registered charity (No. 1156383) that provides a free out of hours transportation service for NHS Hospitals in our area, 365 days per year, between 19:00 and 06:00 weekday evenings and 24hrs a day at weekends and on public holidays. SERV Wessex transports blood products and other urgent consignments allowing hospitals to divert financial and staff resources elsewhere.
