Who are SERV Wessex?
SERV Wessex is a registered charity (No. 1156383) that provides a free out of hours transportation service for NHS Hospitals in Hampshire Dorset and Wiltshire. We operate 365 days per year, between 19:00 and 06:00 weekday evenings and 24hrs a day at weekends and on public holidays. SERV Wessex transports blood products and other urgent consignments allowing hospitals to divert financial and staff resources elsewhere. All of our riders are volunteers who donate their own time and fuel to providing a free service to hospitals. We also operate a regular service to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance based at Thruxton where we change the blood carried by the helicopter every 48 hours.
What vehicles do we use?
Most of our members use their own car or motorcycle but we also have our own small fleet which enables us to reduce the financial burden on our volunteers. Currently we operate a BMW R1200RT, Honda NT700 Deauville, Triumph Tiger, Triumph Sprint and a Yamaha FJR plus a Vauxhall Astra van. Having the van enables us to provide a service to our client hospitals when the weather is too cold to safely transport blood by motorcycle or when the quantities required are much larger.
What do you transport?
We transport blood, pathology samples, patient notes, surgical equipment, frozen Human milk - basically anything that a hospital may call a courier to transport out of hours. We will do this for free saving the hospital approximately £2 per mile.
Who are our volunteers?
Our volunteers come from all walks of life. We have engineers, salespeople, lawyers, police officers, postal workers, service personnel - retired and serving. All human life is here!
What are you paid?
We are not! All our members give up their time free of charge. Whether carrying out deliveries, controlling or fund-raising in the streets, it is all at our own expense. When using our own vehicles, the fuel and maintenance costs are ours as well.
What area do we cover?
We service hospitals across Hampshire, Dorset and South Wiltshire. Our volunteers may typically ride from Havant to the Blood Bank in Southampton and then deliver to a hospital in Dorset. We may collect frozen baby milk from a donor at home during the day and then deliver it to the processing unit at the Princess Anne hospital in Southampton. Check out the ABOUT>OUR CLIENTS link.
If I donate money, what does it pay for?
Any funds that SERV receive go towards the upkeep of the marked vehicles. On rare occasions our chairman may put in a petty cash voucher for more Post-It notes, but none of the money that gets donated goes to the members.
What can I do?
As an individual, you can volunteer to assist us. Whether as a rider, a controller or as a fund-raiser, we always need more helpers. If you do not have time to assist, you can make a donation. As a company you could sponsor our activities or maybe subsidise the purchase of a new vehicle. In return for any corporate sponsorship, we would provide publicity and display your logo on our website or vehicles.
