Rider using their own Bike

  1. Must hold a full unrestricted UK motorcycle licence (Category A) and have no more than 6 points on that licence. For more information on licence types please go the Government website.
  2. All motorcycle riders MUST hold a current Advanced Rider qualification (ROSPA Gold/Silver, IAM, or be a suitable qualified Emergency Services Rider), which has been obtained or renewed within the past three years and must have up to date membership of that organisation.
  3. You must also undertake a reassessment of your riding skills every 3 years, by a suitably qualified person and present your certificate to the secretary. This can be provided by our in-house assessor. RoSPA holders will require to take their test again and maintain their RoSPA membership
  4. Must be willing to carry out a minimum of 3 duties per month across the whole of the Wessex region. Our longest routes are about 100 miles each way but we do try to operate internal handovers to keep riders times and costs to a minimum.
  5. Complete a one-day training course comprising both theory and a familiarisation ride to the local hospitals. Further training rides to the other hospitals take place regularly.
  6. Have access to a serviceable, reliable, and road legal motorcycle suitable for the task of transporting blood products and have suitable insurance cover. Typically, this will be a motorcycle with the capability of carrying a blood box with a maximum weight of 14KG. Typical blood box dimensions are approximately 60x45x45cm. It must also have panniers that can be locked.
  7. Must live within 45 minutes of University Hospital Southampton in moderate traffic.
  8. If the rider no longer complies with the above requirements they must immediately notify the Secretary (or in their absence another committee member) and they are no longer eligible to ride for SERV Wessex.

Rider using a SERV Wessex Blood Bike

As well as the above

  1. You must complete 10 duties and a minimum of 10 jobs on your own bike prior to using a SERV Wessex bike.
  2. Must complete a marked bike assessment ride
  3. Must be aged between 30 and 70
  4. Must not have more than 6 penalty points. If you do have any penalty points you will need to disclose the offence code for the points incurred.
